WONDERS of the OUTER BEACH
A STB Education Program FOR 4th and 5th Graders

An Exciting 5 Hour Program
offered by Save the Beaches.

After assembling in the Cedar Beach Marina parking lot the students are divided into 3 classes. Class is limited to less than 30 students.
The class goes to the "outdoor classrooms" located at Cedar Beach marina and the floating docks. Class subjects are Fishing,
Water and Boat Safety, Seine Fishing and Clamming, Dynamics of the Ocean and Beach Environment.

The Students may also Try
Treading for Clams
and Seine Fishing.
Spring Groups may catch Horseshoe Crabs.

Each group activity is led by Save the Beaches educators, Town of Babylon Bay Management Specialists
or Bay Constables familiar with the area. All of the instructors take many opportunities to stress environmental conservation
and good stewardship. Their purpose is to convey their enthusiasm for the bay side and seashore life while teaching.

Students learn about fishing
and have an opportunity
to try their hands at fishing

Each child is issued a snapper pole.

Types of saltwater fish common
to Long Island are described.

Fishing methods
and baits used are explained.

After lunch, the students move to Overlook Beach where they explore, learn and clean up the ocean beaches.

Class is at the ocean water's edge. Students learn about barrier beaches and the dynamics of the ocean.
The changing condition of the shoreline, erosion concerns, dune preservation and rehabilitation is discussed.
The effects of tides, drifts and storms are explained.

Class is on the beach. Students learn about the beach environment.
The flora and fauna and conditions at the different levels of the beach are discussed.
Birds and ocean shellfish are identified and the endangered species programs explained.

In the End, The Day

How Precious and Fragile the Beach Is.

Last, the students participate in a documented beach clean-up.
The students are told the boundaries of the clean-up and are given lists
created by Ocean Conservancy to record their collection on the beach.
School personnel group the students, 3 to 4 each group, with a chaperone, for the clean-up.

CHECK OUT THE BEACH CLEAN UP RESULTS FOR THIS YEAR!

Save the Beaches members are available to answer questions and offer assistance
on the beach, during the free time and after all of the activities.
