They worked the Beach, the Dunes and Bay Wetlands at the West end of Gilgo and collected An estimated 500 Pounds of Garbage! It's just amazing what slobs we humans can be. |
The Thrill of the Clean Up can be a great experience. Especially when comparing Bags at the Inn in the late afternoon sun. It's a Great Feeling to do some Good. We will be posting future Clean Up Events and would love for more Volunteers. Contact STB if you would like to be put on an email alert for clean up dates. |
DOCUMENTED BEACH CLEAN-UP 2005
In the Fall of 2005 Save the Beaches Educational Program was conducted on September 27th and 28th at Cedar Marina, Overlook Beach, and Cedar Beach for seven 5th grade classes from Babylon Grade School.
As always the morning interactive educational opportunities included “bay ecology”, “boating and water safety” and “fin-fishing” on the Marina side of Cedar Beach. On the ocean side the “ocean dynamics” and “beach habitats” segments of the program were presented.
In the category of, “Why didn’t we think of this before”, we added a new activity to the afternoon portion of our Educational Program – a beach cleanup.
The fifth graders conducted a “documented beach cleanup” using the data sheets and bags provided by Ocean Conservancy and the Americal Littoral Society.
On Overlook Beach on the 27th and Cedar Beach on the 28th, in the allotted 45 minutes, the students collected 695 pounds of debris in 49 bags plus 2 piles of metal and wood and a rubber tire. (See data sheet recap below.)

Babylon 5th Graders 2006 |
CLEANUP BY BABYLON GRADE SCHOOL 2006
On September 26 and 27 Save the Beaches volunteers conducted its fall program for 146 fifth graders from Babylon Grade School at Cedar Marina and Cedar and Overlook Beaches.
It was a huge success due in part to the wonderful weather and the enthusiastic students. The sixth and final activity of the program was a documented beach clean-up. Once again, it was a huge success. 29 buddy groups set out with their parent chaperones and for 35 to 40 minutes picked up, bagged, and catalogued 460 pounds of debris which did not include several large metal pieces and hefty dock sections.
