Save the Beaches |
Save the Beaches was founded as a not-for-profit corporation in 1983.
It was sparked by a concern about private commercial enterprises,
with political connections, taking over the environmentally critical,
but economically lucrative Coastal Zone.
Save the Beaches
Fund’s stated purpose;
“Preserve and Protect
our Coastal Heritage, Wildlife and Wetlands”
In the past 12 years STBF has performed numerous activities and projects. Some are listed below.
Conducted 16 Plantings:
Red Cedars at Oak Beach
Beachgrass at Cedar, Oak and Gilgo Beaches
Red Cedar Nursery on the Mainland
Red Cedar, Autumn Olive, Bayberry and Rugosa Rose Nurseries at West
Gilgo
Bayberry and Rugosa Roses at the Gilgo West Dune area.
Funded Eagle Scout, Cub Scout and Town of Babylon Beachgrass Plantings.
Built and erected 11 Osprey Nesting Platforms.
Built and distributed 60 Bat Houses.
Fabricated and distributed kits for making Swallow Nesting Boxes.
Created kits for wood Duck Boxes and Tern
Decoys for Babylon Scouts to assemble and install in local wetlands
to encourage endangered colonial
shore birds to nest in areas not frequented by predatory mammals.
Sponsored many Coastal Clean-Ups.
Participated in many Coastal Clean-ups.
Offer Coastal Clean-Up
Info Packs and Collection Bags
to Babylon
Area Youth Groups.
Publish Quarterly Newsletters with Articles of interest to those concerned
with the preservation and protection
of the barrier beach environment.
Each Spring Term and each Fall Term, conducted 2 all day interactive Educational
Programs for 4th and 5th graders
(75 to 100 students each
session) from Babylon Town schools at Cedar Beach.
Periodically conduct Essay Contests for students on subjects relating to the beach environment.
Sponsored Free Lectures on subjects such as;
Weather Predicting
Hurricanes
Shoreline Movement
Sea Mammals and Turtles
Shore Birds
Babylon’s Barrier Beach Heritage
Environmental Observation from
Space
Participated in local fairs and distributed STBF literature about barrier beach environmental issues to the general public.
Offer a Library of videotapes about species, events and
issues of concern to
people interested in the shore environment.
Sponsored a Boy Scout Troop.
Facilitated and funded Environmental Projects with other troops,
Cub Packs, Girl Scouts and Junior High School
groups and sent each
participating youth a Certificate of Appreciation.
Distributed information from New York Sea Grant on Water Quality stewardship throughout Babylon with our Boy Scout Troop.
Funded the materials for the Town of Babylon storm drain stenciling “Don’t Dump” project.
Initiated and manned a joint project with Suffolk County Vector
Control to provide the data necessary for weekly larvacide spraying
of the salt marsh meadows to Control Mosquitos and offer a long term restructuring of the mosquito
cuts and open marsh water management.
Hold annual parties to give the Save the Beaches members and interested
individuals an opportunity to
meet informally with local elected officials. The entire Town Board, our Suffolk County Legislator,
our US Congressman,
and our State Senator have generally attended
as well as other incumbents, not from our district.
Frequently send letters about Barrier Beach Environmental Issues to the Governor, and the Long Island delegation
in the State Assembly
and State Senate, the NYS Department of Transportation, the NYS Park
Commission, and the NYS Police.
Encourage our membership to write to their elected officials
about matters of concern ranging from the immediate closing of any
breaches on the Long Island barrier islands to the illegal parking
along the dune area.
Enlisted volunteers for the Nature Conservancy Endangered
Shorebird program.
Several
of our members sit on various environmentally interested boards and commissions.
